Hays County Historical Commission
Halifax Ranch, Kyle
5 p.m. November 29, 2007

They moseyed down the trail from the gate heading west by ones and twos, into the sinking sun and toward the chuck wagon as so many had done before them. The warmth and smells emanating from the cook fire drew them near as the last meeting of the year began on a cool, crisp evening.

Eleven commission members and their guests were present, including Eagle Scout Brad Weber and his family who were special guests. The Hays High School student was recognized for his work restoring Buda’s Cocke Cemetery and presented with a commemorative silver dollar by Chairman Kate Johnson. The now tamed, badly overgrown one-acre site is near the intersection of FM 967 and 1626. His photo displaying the dollar will be sent to area newspapers and put up on HCHC web site.

Jim Cullen reported that work is continuing to bring the Cocke Cemetery back to its greater glory. Lehman High School National Honor Society members have worked twice in the last month on a historical survey of Coronado Cemetery. Application is being made for a marker at Butler Cemetery.

Mary Ann Mattis read the text for the historical marker to be placed in Butler Cemetery in Driftwood. Jim Cullen moved to approve the text as read. Dorothy Gumbert seconded.

Shelley Henry has five authors lined up for the book signing at the Cock House in San Marcos on Saturday, December 8 from 1-3 pm. Publicity will go out. Members signed up to help. Bonnie Eissler said Oral History would be filmed at the event. Richard Kidd will put information of the book signing on the web. Cookie donations were encouraged from members.

Chairman Kate Johnson reported the county now has the jailhouse deed so work can begin. LaMarr Petersen thanked Dorothy Gumbert for information on how to reach Robert Redford for a future fundraiser.

Thanks to Mary Mattis for taking minutes and members who sent me their reports. Respectfully submitted, Linda Keese Recording Secretary.
